Woke up and checked the weather buoy and it said 3 knots of wind at Sand Key. So it was time to call in sick and head out on the water. Me and Catherine went we were out on the water by about 8:30 am.
Had friends from NY and Jacksonville , Teddy Hudson and Jeff Thoma , here for the weekend, the weather was less then perfect. They wanted to go snorkeling, and wanted to try to press through the wind. So I said sure, and we went out around 10:00 am. The water was great, the blue water that was bit offshore had pushed onto the reef and there was about 40-50 feet of vis in front of Key West. It actually looked like it might even get better further offshore.
Went out today with Cal (njspearo) and Catherine, it wasn’t too great. Visibility on the main reef was terrible 15-20 feet tops from Sand Key to a little west of Satan Shoal. Wind was blowing from the northeast 14-18 knots and later in the day switched to east.
We drifted the bar most of the day, I shot some yellow jacks and a mackerel, there was blue water on the bar with visibility ranging from 50-80 feet. I don’t know that many spots on the bar yet so we mostly just drifted along blindly in water 40-65 feet deep. We didn’t see a lot of fish, except towards the end of the day, I think Cal may need to wear some contacts or something because even though fish were few he didn’t see any at all.
I uploaded a couple videos, nothing too exciting a pack of jacks hunting on the reef with a nurse shark and a bull shark attacking a flats boat I was fishing in.
I was going through my hard drive looking for photos to use on some websites I am working on, and grabbed a bunch of old pics for this site. There are some UW, fishing, outdoors etc taken over the last few years, mostly taken before I started spearfishing. Which looking at the visibility in some of the pictures, I kick myself for.
Went out Sunday with Brad (keyskiller) we drifted most of the day in waters 40-60 feet. I got a cold or something and it is surprising how much a weaker swimmer you are when a little sick. The wind was 15-19 knots from the south east, current a about a knot or so headed west. Reef visibility was pretty weak around 20 at the drop off but just offshore there was blue water and the visibility jumped to 80 feet or so.
