We went out for a half day yesterday the vis wasn’t too hot 20-30 feet. We drifted over a wreck in around 80 feet of water and if you dove down it was just like diving into an abyss. We saw a bunch of jacks, and some small king mackerel. I shot an AJ but it tore off.
After that we went to the bar and the vis was worse, so we came in and checked the reef. Still crap, so we decided to drift some patch reefs in 20 feet of water. Its was fun but the fish where small. We picked up red groupers, hogfish and a mutton.
We were drifting in 20 feet of water and a school of big yellow jacks with a nurse in tow swam right in front of me and I missed the biggest one. I just tried a lighter shaft on my gun because I felt kind of ridiculous shooting hogs and red grouper with a 7.5 mm shaft and a double wrap of mono. I think I should stick with the heavy shaft, I’m used to it and I wouldn’t have missed that shot.
Anyways a couple minutes after I reload, this enormous hammerhead comes swimming in and swims right at me. Shark was at least 10-12 feet long, and its head looked like it was over 2 feet across. I pointed my gun at it and kept thinking it’s going turn, it’s going turn, and at that last second it turned. I yelled to Albie and when I saw it circling back I called for the boat. Catherine and Gabbi, they found my tone of yell very amusing.
I got out but Albie wanted to film the shark, so we give the camera to him and I got back in. The shark kept circling us and swimming directly underneath us. I’m not sure what it was looking for, we hadn’t shot a fish in while at that point.
I should have swam down next to shark to show the scale better, but after its initial close pass I was too spooked. Albie shot a mutton that tore off and that might have been what drew the hammer in, I also took a shot at a mutton but missed. Damn that light shaft. Then Albie shot the cubera and we headed in. Pretty fun day for being so close to Key West and in shallow water.
Video taken in the past few weeks. People in the Video Brad Colen , Alberto Solares , Cal Bucci and Myself. Clips filmed by Alberto and Catherine Tims and Myself. Water Depths were 20-70 feet. Fish taken are Mutton Snapper, Triggerfish, Ciro Mackerel, HorseEye and yellow jack.
Pat, Albie, Brad and Chris went out spearfishing yesterday. The vis was awesome to kind of sucky. We ran west and then came back east chasing the vis.
We had a good day and shot numerous fish of a wide variety of species, triggerfish, mutton snappers, black groupers, porgy, cero mackerel and hogfish.
It was breezing and a bit rough in the afternoon, I think the winds got up to around 18 knots. No big shark sightings or anything. One thing that stood out is that we brought a bunch of chum and chumming was a big waste of time. We did way better just drifting around, we also hit some rocks that where covered in fish last week and there wasn’t anyone there.
Went out this past Sunday with Cal, Pat and Brad to go spearfishing west of Key West. The weather report was calling for 15-20 knots winds and since it had been blowing over 20 for almost a week straight I knew it probably wouldn’t be the type of trip everyone would have fun on. Catherine wisely opted for land based activities. The weather report was sort of right , we actually had winds up to 27 knots but the sun was shining and there was blue gulf stream water on the edge of the reef so we stuck it out.
We shot a variety of reef fish but again where skunked on the black groupers. I only saw about 4 legal sized ones, and at least a dozen shorts. I shot one and it and promptly tore off. I just retied my bands and I think the gun is shooting a little high.
I also had a huge king mackerel tear off, by far the largest I have ever gotten a shot on. I would say he was over 30# maybe pushing #40. Everything looks bigger underwater though. Pat got a shot on a huge cobia but it didn’t happen. Although it wasn’t the best trip out, if we had gotten either of those fish it would have been pretty good.
We saw a huge hammerhead, he just did a swim by and that was it. I marked some really nice bottom in 50-60 feet and also found some more huge boulders in 35 feet. Have to put in some time drifting to mark some big rocks in 50+ feet of water.
Went out the past couple days spearfishing and lobstering. Both days where half days and conditions weren’t that great. Supposedly there were awesome conditions in terms of visibility out west but I just went out in front of Key West. The wind forecast of 10-15 was more like 17-18, and it was rough on reef and really rough past the edge of the
reef.
On the reef the water green with less then 20 feet of visibility past the edge of the reef there was beautiful blue water but screaming current and huge waves. I promised Catherine I wouldn’t make her go in the big waves for awhile. So we stuck it out on the green reef. shot a few fish and caught some lobsters. Nothing big or photogenic. Catherine took a ton of pictures of various reef life and she had blast. We came in shallow in a bit a grabbed a couple lobsters.
The next day Cal , Catherine and I went out lobstering for a half day in the morning. Again the wind was much higher then the forecast. The waters inshore where pretty good with 15 feet of so a vis in the shallows and we managed to catch 14 lobsters. Its was a blast for being so close to home. Again Catherine filled up the memory card with photos of the various sea life.
